Men
In Black – Are Back!
By: Bruce Biegler (April 23/06)
Following
his very close encounter with the top end guardwall at IHRA
San Antonio last month, Carl “Big Dog” Spiering
and his Eaton Cutler-Hammer Pro Modified team returned to
action during last weekend’s IHRA Nicko’s Spring
Nationals in North Carolina.
At that event the team ran their spectacular new G-Force
Race cars built ’67 Camaro in competition for the first
time and in a true testament to the team’s talent qualified
the car within a super-tough Pro Modified program.
Using their own E.R.D.-built Hemi engine program, Spiering
ran 6.218 secs at 226.77 mph on what was only the second full
pass with the new car which was impressive to say the least.
Then on Sunday Carl bolted out of the gate and was well ahead
of opponent Burton Auxier during the first round (.078 to
.117 RT) before a fuel delivery problem set in forcing him
to abort.
“I commend G-Force Race Cars – they are the people
that make these chassis do what they are supposed to do,”
said Carl. “We took the power out of the Corvette and
put it in this car and then made three short track runs at
Farmington Dragway before we went to Rockingham. The car went
perfectly straight down the track every time.”
The
car’s solid performance was just what the doctor order
for Spiering who was still recovering following his incident
in Texas.
“Going to the finish line for the first time after
what happened – I don’t care who you are –
if you’re not nervous then you have a problem,”
he added. “But now the finish line jitters are all gone.
I have a really stable race car and that ultimately made it
easy to get back in the saddle. ”
The team did run at Rockingham sans their familiar Eaton
Cutler-Hammer paint scheme. However that cool Pro Street look
will soon be a thing of the past as the car will shortly be
skinned with a stunning new corporate finish right in time
for the much anticipated traditional season-opening event
for Canada, the IHRA’s Mopar Canadian Nationals at Grand
Bend Motorplex.
